2020 Colorado Secondary Draw

There is always an opportunity to hunt in Colorado. There is no reason why you should not be able to hunt in Colorado this year or any other year. Okay, so you missed out on the primary draw that had a deadline of April 7th. No problem! Whether you are a resident or non-resident, you still have a great opportunity to hunt in 2020.

New in Colorado this year is the Secondary Draw. Colorado Parks and Wildlife will begin to accept applications starting June 5th with a deadline of July 7th at 8 PM (MDT). In years past, you used to have to participate in the deer and elk Primary Draw. If you were unsuccessful in that draw, you would have an option to get a license on the leftover draw. Now it is open to everyone, even if you did not participate in the Primary Draw. Plus two more species will be added; bear and pronghorn.

If you are eager to get your youngster out on a hunt, this is a great opportunity to do so. The Secondary Draw gives 100% preference to youth. This means all youth applications are processed first and could mean that a hunt may draw out before processing adult applications. Once the Secondary Draw is completed, remaining licenses will go to a leftover list and will be available to purchase on August 4th at 9 AM (MDT).

Still did not get a license through the Primary or Secondary Draw? No worries, you can still hunt this year in Colorado. Starting August 6th at 9 AM (MDT) you will be able to buy Over-the-Counter (OTC) licenses. Most notable is the archery season and 2nd and 3rd Rifle season for elk. There is also opportunities to get an OTC license for bear, pronghorn and whitetail deer. All information on the OTC licenses can be obtained in the 2020 Colorado Big Game brochure available at cpw.state.co.us From the home page, simply locate the blue bar across the top of the page, click on ‘Things To Do’ , scroll down to ‘Hunting’and click on ‘Big Game’. You can also pick up a copy of the brochure at any state park, CPW wildlife office and sales agent (i.e., Walmart, Bass Pro Shops).

And now you see, there is no reason why you should miss out on hunting in Colorado this year or any other year.
