Kansas is often known as the best state for harvesting big mature deer, and with over 300,000 acres of public hunting land, it is one of the best states for out of state deer hunting!

As a first timer applying for permits in various states, it can get pretty overwhelming, especially because NO state is the same. While the Kansas draw deadline is April 24, I wanted to hopefully help save you time in the future when applying for one of the most coveted Kansas deer permits!

A Kansas Non-Resident hunting license will cost $97.50 for an adult 16 and older, and $42.50 for anybody 15 and younger. The whitetail deer permit will cost $442.50 for an adult, while the youth permits will cost $117.50. Those prices include a $27.50 nonrefundable application fee. If you’d like to harvest a mule deer, you’ll have to purchase an additional Mule Deer Stamp for $152.50. After you successfully draw your whitetail permit, you will be put into an additional draw for the mule deer stamp. If you do not draw the mule deer stamp, you will be issued a refund, and receive your whitetail permit.

What can you harvest if you draw a permit? If you draw a permit you will be able to harvest one whitetail buck, and one whitetail doe. If you successfully draw a Mule Deer Stamp as well, your whitetail permits will be converted into an either species permit.

How the Kansas draw system works, they have a set number of permits every year, and they use a random computer program to choose the names of the lucky hunters. If you do not draw, you will be refunded the amount of your tag, and will acquire a preference point for the next year.

You will purchase your licenses and apply for your permits through the Kansas Department of Wildlife, Parks, and Tourism website. You will go to https://ksoutdoors.com/Hunting and select “Buy your License/Permit Online”. Then you will create a new customer profile unless you already have an account set up. After you have created your account, you click on the drop-down button in the top, left corner of the screen and select “Licensing and Applications”. Next, select “Lottery Applications”. Then, you will choose “Non-Resident”. Next, you choose “Non-Res Deer Permit Application”. You will then pick your preferences of which unit you want to select, and which method of take you want to use. You get four choices. Also, with each unit you choose, you get to choose an adjacent unit to go along with your permit. At the bottom of the screen you can click the box to choose if you would like to also apply for the Mule Deer Permit. Next, you will have to add a hunting license to your cart. Your next step is to check out and cross your fingers your one of the lucky hunters drawn!

Good luck, and Happy Hunting!
