My First Time Saddle Hunting
I mostly hunt public land that is walking access only. After many years of hauling a climbing tree stand miles into the forest, and limiting myself to only being able to hunt perfectly straight trees, I decided it was time for a change. I bought a set of Lone Wolf climbing sticks and had plans to get a lightweight hang on stand as well. But before I bought the stand I discovered saddle hunting.
I quickly ordered the Trophyline Ambush saddle. The season had already started, so the day it arrived I headed to the forest. After a few hunts and only standing on a ring of steps, I realized for all day hunts I needed a platform for my feet. I had an old hang on stand that worked perfect. I took it apart and used the seat portion as a platform. However, I still wasn’t satisfied with carrying sticks and a platform.
I ordered the Treehopper hand drill and bolt kit. Now my setup is under 10 pounds, including the saddle and tether. I was lucky enough to take an 8 point and a doe this season from the saddle! The initial expense is a bit high, but definitely worth it in the end. Now I only need one setup instead of multiple treestands.
The setup process is quick and quiet, and I make one trip up the tree. This season I actually set up with a deer bedded within 50 yards multiple times. If you’re looking for a change, keep an open mind and give saddle hunting a try. I highly recommend it!
